GIRLS

Sandpoint 8, Mead 4

MEAD — Cassidy Aitken and Rowan Davis, both seniors who were on the founding Sandpoint girls youth lacrosse team in 2016, scored three goals each to lead the Bulldogs to an 8-4 victory over Mead at Mt. Spokane High on Wednesday.

It was a bittersweet ending for all of Sandpoint’s five seniors, but for Davis and Aitken, one that was extra special.

“It was a really physical game, but every time we play the Big Cats it’s a little rough,” head coach Nancy Dooley said. “For these girls to end on a high note after playing since second-third grade, to close so strongly — how fun. Those two (Cassidy and Rowan) have been an integral part of our team this season and will be sorely missed.”

Also special, the other two goals were scored by Josie Cox and Cecilia Dignan, their first goals ever at the varsity level. With most players playing through a variety of different injuries, it was all the more impressive. At the end of the night, the Bulldogs had no reserves available.

Sandpoint has five seniors this year, all of whom contributed to the team’s success this season: Kayla Beers, Eva Sloan, Terra Bode, Davis, and Aitken.

“We’re sad to see the seniors leave; they all played multiple years together,” Dooley said. “They were some really strong leaders for our team. On the other hand, we’re excited about our returning players and the influx of seven to eight eighth graders that will be moving up next year.”

Sandpoint finished the season 7-3 and second in the Washington State Lacrosse Association’s Eastern Division.
